Sketching and drawing in Korea

I've drawn mostly scenes from Jeju Island over the last three years, but my sketchbook is full of Korea's mainland, too.

My personal pet project is a combination of botanical illustrations of local plants, their uses in traditional culture, medicine and cuisine.

Green tea plantations can be found on Jeju Island, too, even though they don't reach the vastness of mainland production. The traditional Korean tea ceremony, Tado, is a lot less formal and time-consuming than the more well-known Japanese one.

Jeju Island has undergone quite the transformation since my first visit 5 years ago. Many of the rural areas have turned from farms and fishing villages to tourist spots, with picturesque little cafes and restaurants - and a lot of larger constructions that, frankly, don't improve the view.

Jeju's most famous produce has to be 'Gyul' - and I hesitate to translate this as 'clementine' or 'mandarines'. There's such a variety of sizes, colors, textures and tastes!

Jeonju, Oktober 2016 - To see all the traditionally clothed tourists stroll through the old part of town with cameras and phones makes for a surreal and funny experience!
